Data Source:
American Antiquarian Society, Lampi Collection of American Electoral Returns, 1787–1825, "Rhode Island 1808 Presidential Electors." The Lampi Collection gives James Madison a statewide vote total of 2,692, but this is inconsistent with the town data.

In strictness, the data used here refers to the number of votes cast for the most successful electoral-college candidate for each party—that is, the one with the highest statewide vote total. It should be emphasized, however, that the vote totals were in each case remarkably close. The least-successful Republican elector received only 21 fewer votes than the most successful, while for Federalists the gap was only 10.
