Reports the BBC:
Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of this month after nearly eight years as the head of the Catholic Church, saying he is too old to continue at the age of 85.
And so comes word of the first papal resignation in 600 years. Next come the reactions—not all of them pretty. A friend of Rod Dreher compares the decision to “a father abandoning his children to wild dogs.”
The quotation bewilders me. Great power and life tenure are a dangerous combination; I respect the man who is determined to lay them down before his wits and abilities leave him. I am not a Catholic, but God bless Benedict XVI.
